In the deepening twilight Chanters Chase seems like a beast of prey draped along the contour of the hill. It is a wood of dark and m mysterious depths and Sir Aylmer had visited it surreptitiously many times before his untimely death through poisoning. His wealthy cousin, now Sir Nathan Montague, undertakes to find the murderer and when he goes in turn to the old sibyl's cottage in Chanters Chase he finds Sir Aylmer had made a curious marriage contract with a witch - in return for the payment of his debts. Sir Nathan is amazed to discover that 'the witch' is the lovely Miranda Rede, god-daughter of the vicar, and that the witches intend to trap him into fufilling Aylmer's contract. As Chanters Chase yields up its secrets, it seems that more sinister forces than witchcraft are afoot, and Miranda has cause to fear for her life.
