Possessed of panoramic scope and incisve originality, Cities of salt is a spell-binding evocation of Bedouin life, that reveals and humanises a society that has for too long been misunderstood by the West. The novel is set in an unnamed Persian Gulf kingdom in the 1930's. Oil has been discovered there, and the story tells of the disruption and diaspora of a poor oasis community. As the Americans colonise this remote region, Abdeirahman Munif portrays their cultural confrontation with the Arabs, in which religion, history, superstition and mutual incomprehension all play a part.
